Cosmetic Imaging

Cosmetic imaging uses a computer to digitally alter the patient’s smile by demonstrating various treatments for aesthetic results. Cosmetic imaging can be used to demonstrate the patients what cosmetic dentistry could do to enhance their smile, from simulating a simple procedure like teeth whitening to a complicated full mouth restoration. This method makes it easy for the patients to visualize their treatment options and as well as for the doctors to demonstrate and give recommendations on what treatment to choose which also has a higher rate of acceptance by the patients.

Procedure

The procedure for cosmetic imaging is very simple and gives very good results.

  1. An image of the patient's smile is captured.
  2. The picture is stored in an electronic photo album.
  3. The database locates the saved picture either by alphabetic search or by selecting the thumbnail image of the patient's saved picture.
  4. Next step is to alter the image to demonstrate treatment using a software with the help of cosmetic tools.
  5. Some of the softwares used in this procedure are ImageFX and Vipersoft.
  6. The tools used in this software are similar to the ones used in photoshop but are customized for easy dental applications.
  7. There are two basic ways to make cosmetic imaging changes.
  8. First is to reshape individual teeth for simple procedures like tooth lengthening and tooth whitening.
  9. For complex procedures like tooth replacements, the replacement tools allows us to replace the selected tooth with an ideal tooth from a smile library.
  10. The patient should be given a disclaimer that this procedure is just a simulation and actual results may vary from what was demonstrated.

Why Cosmetic Imaging

  1. Cosmetic imaging makes it easy or patients to visualize the treatment options.
  2. This procedure helps to simplify communication with patients and increase the probability of case acceptance.
  3. It is easy to incorporate the pictures and the X-rays taken directly into the patients record for quick reference and access.
  4. The easy to use software shows the patients their option of treatment and helps educate them on their choice of treatment.
  5. Realistic pictures and X-ray images help patients to visualize what they would like after undergoing the treatment.

Treatment Planning

Treatment planning is basically a schedule of procedures and appointments for a patients treatment or in simple terms it is a blue print or a documented plan that explains the patients oral complication and a detailed suggested procedure that needs to be done for the expected outcome. The treatment plan records should be recorded regularly with every appointment and kept track of it. A patient's dental treatment plan abstracts what treatment or procedure the dentist provides, for how much time and how much will it cost after insurance, if it is applicable. Treatment planning four different phases: Urgent phase, control phase, re-evaluation phase, definitive phase and maintenance phase.
